People in Japan are taking a moment to remember the lives lost nine years ago when a major earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident devastated the country. Life was forever changed for thousands, and many are still coping with the aftermath.
Early Wednesday morning, people in the disaster-stricken regions gathered to honor the victims. On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9 earthquake struck, generating a tsunami more than 10 meters tall.
The disaster left 18,428 people dead or missing. Another 3,739 people have died in the years that followed from disaster-related causes.
3.11 is synonymous with the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. It suffered a triple meltdown in what's considered the world's worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl. Tens of thousands were forced from their homes, and almost a decade later, several municipalities remain blocked off.

日本の人々は、日本に壊滅的な被害をもたらした巨大地震、津波、それに原発事故によって９年前に失われた命をしのんでいます。多数の人々の生活が永遠に変わり、その多くは依然として震災の後遺症に向き合っています。
水曜日（３月１１日）の早朝、被災地では人々が集まり、東日本大震災の犠牲者を悼みました。２０１１年３月１１日、マグニチュード９.０の地震が発生し、１０メートルを超える高さの津波が押し寄せました。
この震災での死者と行方不明者は１８,４２８人、また、そのあとの数年で、震災に関係する原因で亡くなった関連死は３,７３９人に上っています。
３.１１で思い起こされるのは、３基の原子炉がメルトダウンを起こし、チェルノブイリ以来、世界最悪レベルとされる原発事故に至った福島第一原子力発電所です。この原発事故によって、何万人もの人が自宅からの避難を余儀なくされ、１０年近くたっても、複数の市町村が立ち入り禁止となったままです。
